Grace Slick

Grace Slick, in a lot of ways, became the poster girl for drug abuse in the 1960’s. She penned the anthem of the time, “White Rabbit” which is loosely be about the C.S. Lewis story, Alice in Wonderland, with great substance abuse suggestions. The song was responsible for catapulting Jefferson Airplane and Grace Slick to become widely known. She admittedly experimented with drugs in her younger years but her substance of choice was alcoholic beverages. Grace crashed her vehicle into a structure close to the Golden Gate Bridge in 1971 going 80 mph driving under the influence. She credits several arrests to being intoxicated. At another point, Slick prepared to put LSD into a drink of then President Nixon at a White House celebration. Slick went to rehab in 1978 for alcohol abuse. Sober since the 1980s, Slick continued to pursue a career in music but never matched the success of Jefferson Airplane or Jefferson Starship. By the 1990s, Slick had left music and trained in art. During an interview with CNN, she labeled herself as a nonpracticing alcoholic – a person who doesn’t consume alcohol but continues to be an alcoholic.
